is Acne?
Acne is a term that refers to clogged pores, pimples and deep lumps (cysts or nodules) that can occur on the shoulders, face, chest, neck and back. Acne generally affects most teenagers to some extent but this disease is not restricted to any age group. Adults in their 20's and even into their 40's can get acne.
Nearly 100% of people between the ages of twelve and seventeen have had at least one occasion where they have had a pimple, blackhead or whitehead. Many young persons are able to manage their acne with over the counter treatments in which you can find at your local health or drug store. However, in some cases acne can be come more serious. In a recent study done, research has shown that by their mid-teens more than 40% of adolescents have had acne severe enough to require some sort of treatment given to them by their physician.
Acne will affect young men and women equally but there are some differences. Young men are more likely than young women to have longer lasting more severe forms of acne. Given this fact, young men are still less likely to visit a dermatologist for their acne. Young women can also have intermittent acne due to hormonal changes associated with their menstural cycle and acne caused by cosmetics. These forms of acne can afflict a young women will into adulthood.
